Brazilian - Norwegian Collaboration

07.12.2017

University of Stavanger (UiS) is working with partners in Brazil to further develop education in the area of environmental science and technology. Their overall goal is to increase student mobility between the two countries and establish a joint Summer school in Brazil.

The project “Nor-Bra2020: Gearing the future generations towards a sustainable use of the environment” aims to establish a long term collaboration between Norway and Brazil with the vision of a joint Master program.

Student mobility linked to research activities

This week the first workshop with participants from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ, Brazil), UiS and the International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS) took place at UiS.

Project leader Daniela M. Pampanin (Associate Professor II at Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and Senior Researcher at IRIS) opened the workshop by stating the two institutions have a lot to learn from each other.

– We need to get to know each other’s research activities and interests, and common interests for exchanging Master students for thesis work, says Pampanin.

Principal goals for the project are the exchange of students for Bachelor/Master/PhD thesis work and the launching of a Summer school for UiS and UFRJ students, in the area of environmental sustainability (Biodiversity from molecules to ecosystem), already in 2018. By 2020, they hope to have mapped out the road to a joint master.

During the workshop, they also planned guest lecturing, and the way forward for the project.

The project is an UTFORSK2016 project granted by SIU (Norwegian Center for international cooperation in education). UTFORSK supports project cooperation between higher education institutions in Norway and higher education institutions in Brazil, China, India, Japan, Russia and South Africa.
