Pumps & Pipes 2017 Houston

19.12.2017

The Pumps & Pipes conference takes place in Houston every year and it provides a platform to bring together professionals from medical, energy, aerospace, academia and community to interact for the transfer of knowledge and technology knowhow.

On December 4th 2017 the Texas Medical Center provided the venue for this year’s conference and the delegation from the IRIS Medtech Group consisted of Thor Ole Gulsrud, Martin Risdal and Ingunn Westvik Jolma.

Research Scientist, Ingunn Westvik Jolma explains that the conference program covered many different subjects. “We learned about using satellite data for mosquito surveillance, NASA’s plans for discovery of outer space, urban wind power, DNA sequencing at the space station and an update on Norway Pumps & Pipes”, Jolma says.  “We also received great feed-back on the way we organize the Norwegian version of Pumps & Pipes", a smiling Jolma continues. Automated medical treatment
“The most interesting we saw at the conference was probably a demonstration of a robot that allows the operator to remote control a catheter that has been inserted into a vein. This technology protects cardiologists from x-ray radiation and the catheter can be operated with much higher precision than manual insertion. It is very interesting since it is quite parallel to what happens within automated drilling in the oil- and gas industry”, Jolma says with great enthusiasm.

On the next day Norway Pumps and Pipes Manager, Thor Ole Gulsrud made a presentation to more than one hundred people at the Norway House while Martin Risdal and Ingunn Westvik Jolma had meetings with scientists from DeBakey Methodist Heart and Vascular Center and from Rice to discuss possibilities for cooperation. All in all a very successful trip to Houston. The presentation An update from the land of the midnight sun can be viewed here.
